Want to Form a Union?

Unions are organizations of workers who join together to achieve dignity, respect and fair treatment. Starting a union at your workplace won't be easy, but it's not rocket science either. There are some things you need to know, and some things you need to think about.

  • Unions are formed by a majority vote of you and your co-workers. How much support and enthusiasm is there for a union? What are the issues or the reasons why you want to start a union?
  • Who is your employer? Is it a big corporation, a government agency, a hospital, or a museum?

Different rules apply if you work for a public employer as opposed to a private employer. And most often, different unions represent different kinds of workers.

Council 5 represents people who provide services to the public in Minnesota. That means state and local governments, schools and colleges, health care facilities, museums, and non-profit organizations. But even if you are not working in these areas, we can still help you out by connecting you with the right people.

Please give us a few details in the form below, and we'll get in touch right away. Anything you tell us will kept between us.

Enter your personal non-work phone number where we can contact you.
Tell us in a few words why you want to form a union. It doesn't have to be long or list every issue. Just give us a sense of what's going on at your job. There's no wrong answers. Are you underpaid? Are you understaffed? Is there a bad manager? There are as many good reasons to form a union as there are union members, tell us yours!
