One of the state’s largest and most politically active unions – AFSCME Minnesota Council 5 – today announced its endorsement of U.S. Sen. Tina Smith.

Smith was appointed by Gov. Mark Dayton to replace Sen. Al Franken’s spot, and the election will allow her to fill the last two years of the term.

“I am honored to have the endorsement of AFSCME Council 5 and to stand with the hardworking public employees of Minnesota,” said Sen. Smith. “I am thankful for the work that AFSCME Council 5 members do every day to keep Minnesota running. I’ve stood with working families and fought to expand access to paid parental leave and raise the state’s minimum wage. In the Senate, I am fighting to protect the pensions of hardworking Minnesotans. I will always be a fierce advocate and fight with workers to protect their rights and freedoms to organize and collectively improve their working conditions.”

“There is no one more qualified or capable than Tina Smith to represent all Minnesotans in the U.S. Senate,” says Judy Wahlberg, president of AFSCME Council 5. “Tina is a proven champion for working families and women. She has worked tirelessly for paid parental leave and pay equity. Thanks to her, parents can bond with their newborns and women are treated as equals in state service.

“Tina supports workers’ rights to collectively bargain and have a voice in the workplace so we can improve lives for ourselves, our families and our communities,” Wahlberg says. “Tina knows that our unions bring us real freedom: the freedom to provide for our families, care for sick loved ones and retire with dignity. We need her voice in Washington.”

As a U.S. Senator, Smith serves on the Select Committee to stabilize pensions. She is fighting to lower the cost of health care and defend Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

In Minnesota, Smith helped expand access to paid parental leave, raised the state’s minimum wage and supported equal pay. She also supported wage increases for state employees and blocked attacks on unions. AFSCME Council 5 is proud to endorse Tina Smith to finish her full term in the U.S. Senate.
