Respect and a Raise: We've Earned It

Respect is essential in the labor movement and in life. It boils down to how we treat others and how we expect to be treated. As union members, we respect ourselves and we demand respect from our employers. The struggle for respect is nothing new for AFSCME members. It’s part of the legacy that we inherit from the workers who came before us.

Safe Jobs Now! Nearly All Injuries Can Be Prevented

Violence in the workplace has become an alarming epidemic. It’s increasingly common in workplaces where violence is expected – in mental health and corrections – but also in almost every occupation that deals with the public. For the record: Our union won’t tolerate injuries related to workplace violence. Clocking in should never mean putting your life on the line. Everyone deserves to work a safe shift and return home to our families who count on us.

10 Years of Vision and Grit

Together, we are stronger than anyone who threatens to outsource our work or drive down our wages and benefits.

FIVE FOR THE FIGHT: The Future is Up to Us

We fused our fingers into one, mighty fist when we created Council 5 ten years ago. That was the last time we raised our per-capita dues. Thanks to the decisions we made then, we’ve survived a decade that destroyed many other unions.

In Minnesota, we beat back the Right to Work for Less. We dumped Team Extreme. We fought two government shutdowns. We won countless contract battles. We taxed the rich to save public services and our jobs. We prevented the layoff of thousands of state and local government workers. We protected our retirement security. We expanded collective-bargaining rights

5 Things You Need to Know About the Attacks on Worker Freedoms

Commentary by Eliot Seide, executive director of AFSCME Council 5.

The Sexist Agenda Hidden in Harris v. Quinn

Any day now, the U.S. Supreme Court will rule on Harris v. Quinn, the most important labor law case in decades.  The lawsuit is another attempt to kill off public employee unions.  It centers on a small group of Illinois home care workers who sued to avoid paying fees to the very union that would negotiate their wages and benefits.  Their lawyers are asking the high court to go even further and rule against the right of all public workers in America to choose a union.

Protecting Our Retirement Security

A secure retirement is like a three-legged stool.  To be comfortable, you need a traditional pension, Social Security, and personal savings.

Let's Move Minnesota in 2014!

Minnesota has an urgent transportation problem that’s making it difficult for us to get to our next destination, whether that’s work, school, play, or family.

JANUARY 2014: Mandela's Legacy

Our union pays respect to freedom fighter Nelson Mandela, whose journey from political prisoner to president led South Africa out of apartheid.
