Respect and a Raise: We've Earned It

5-26-2015

Respect is essential in the labor movement and in life. It boils down to how we treat others and how we expect to be treated. As union members, we respect ourselves and we demand respect from our employers. The struggle for respect is nothing new for AFSCME members. It’s part of the legacy that we inherit from the workers who came before us.

Safe Jobs Now! Nearly All Injuries Can Be Prevented

3-20-2015

Violence in the workplace has become an alarming epidemic. It’s increasingly common in workplaces where violence is expected – in mental health and corrections – but also in almost every occupation that deals with the public. For the record: Our union won’t tolerate injuries related to workplace violence. Clocking in should never mean putting your life on the line. Everyone deserves to work a safe shift and return home to our families who count on us.

FIVE FOR THE FIGHT: The Future is Up to Us

9-2-2014

We fused our fingers into one, mighty fist when we created Council 5 ten years ago. That was the last time we raised our per-capita dues. Thanks to the decisions we made then, we’ve survived a decade that destroyed many other unions.

In Minnesota, we beat back the Right to Work for Less. We dumped Team Extreme. We fought two government shutdowns. We won countless contract battles. We taxed the rich to save public services and our jobs. We prevented the layoff of thousands of state and local government workers. We protected our retirement security. We expanded collective-bargaining rights

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2013: Marching for jobs and justice - again

1-6-2014

Demonstrators marched for jobs and justice in 1963. Their signs demanded “Jobs for All,” “Voting Rights,” and “An End to Bias.” They protested the vigilante killing of an unarmed black teenager in the South and his killer’s acquittal.

MARCH-APRIL 2013: Poverty Doesn’t Create Jobs

4-29-2013

In the richest nation on earth, it’s wrong for anyone who works full time to live in poverty. Yet millions of Americans who work a 40-hour week are unable to lift their families out of poverty.
