Today, one of the state’s largest and most politically active unions – AFSCME Minnesota Council 5 – announced its endorsement of Jason Engbrecht to replace Sen. Dick Day (R-Owatonna) in a special election January 26.

Engbrecht serves on the Faribault School Board and is a physics professor at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

“Jason Engbrecht will be a strong advocate for opportunity and prosperity for all working families,” says Tamera Weller, a member of AFSCME Local 607 who lives in Owatonna. “He understands that Minnesota needs to invest in good jobs and a better future by raising revenue fairly.”

“Jason’s ready to partner with AFSCME to save the public services people need most during tough times. And we’re ready to help him find ways for government to save money and operate more efficiently,” says Weller.

AFSCME Council 5, the Minnesota AFL-CIO and DFL Party have all endorsed Engbrecht in a united effort to win the special election. With only two weeks remaining in the campaign, union volunteers will join U.S. Senator Al Franken in Owatonna this Saturday to kick off a door-knocking blitz for Engbrecht.

AFSCME Council 5 is a union of 43,000 public and non-profit workers throughout Minnesota, including 877 members who can vote in Senate District 26. We advocate for excellence in public services, dignity in the workplace, and opportunity and prosperity for all working families.
